Meta has added a Marketing API option called "Choose an audience for each ad creative". It lets you build several ads in one ad set and mark the age range and gender each piece of media suits best. Meta announced it on its developer blog on October 19 and says API partners can see it from that day.
What changed
Until now, age and gender were set at the ad set level, so every creative in that ad set competed for the same demographic. With the new toggle switched on, each creative carries its own age range and gender. Meta's delivery system then pairs each visual with the people it was marked for.
Meta gives two examples. A financial services brand could send retirement-planning videos to people aged 50–65 and savings-account videos to all ages. A fashion retailer could show women's sweaters to women and men's sweaters to men, all from one ad set.
Where it lives in the API
The developer post lists the endpoints that take the new setting. Full field details are in Meta's creative-audience pairing reference.
- Ad sets: POST /act_{ad-account-id}/adsets, POST and GET /{adset-id}
- Ads: POST /act_{ad-account-id}/ads, POST and GET /{ad-id}
- Ad creatives: POST /act_{ad-account-id}/adcreatives, GET /{adcreative-id}
Who it affects and what's unclear
The launch is aimed at Marketing API partners, meaning tools and platforms that build campaigns for advertisers. Meta's post doesn't say when or whether the same control will come to Ads Manager. It also doesn't list supported objectives or formats, or say whether the pairing is a hard limit or a strong delivery signal. Test it before you rely on it.
Social Media Today flagged a real trade-off. Locking a creative to one demographic can miss people buying for someone else, such as a man buying a sweater as a gift for his partner. Going into holiday shopping, that gifting audience is significant.
How to use it sensibly
The clearest use case is consolidation. Instead of splitting age bands or genders into separate ad sets that each need enough budget to learn, you can keep one ad set and let the creative pairing handle relevance. That gives the ad set more conversion volume to optimise on.
Keep at least one unrestricted creative in the mix, and compare it with the paired creatives on cost per result rather than CTR alone. If your tooling vendor hasn't exposed the toggle yet, ask them for a timeline.
What it means for you
- Age and gender can now be set per creative via the Marketing API, not just per ad set.
- Use it to merge demographic-split ad sets so one ad set gets more learning volume.
- Keep an unrestricted creative running, because gift buyers often don't match the product's demographic.
- Meta hasn't said whether pairing is a hard limit, so confirm delivery breakdowns after launch.
