Threads Becomes a Default Placement in All Meta Campaigns

By the Power Ads operators26 Oct 20262 min read

According to reporting from agency Common Thread Collective, Meta is making Threads an automatic placement across all campaigns worldwide, with the rollout completing the week of October 26. Budgets in campaigns that never selected Threads can now be routed there.

What is reported to change

The report, republished by Malakye on October 21, says Threads is included automatically in every active campaign, including ones where the advertiser never chose it. It also says full placement exclusions for Threads have not been available since August 2026; the remaining control is a placement value rule that can cut Threads bids by up to 90%.

We could not find a Meta newsroom or Help Center notice confirming the October timing or the removal of exclusions. Check what your own Ads Manager shows before acting on the no-exclusion claim.

Why it matters for performance

Threads is cheaper inventory: the same report puts Threads CPMs 20 to 40% below Instagram feed. The trade-off is intent. The audience leans toward conversation and discovery rather than shopping, so a cheap impression does not automatically mean a cheap purchase, especially for direct-response offers.

Because the delivery system chases the optimisation event, it may still spend little on Threads if conversions are weak there. The risk is mainly in campaigns optimising for upper-funnel events such as clicks or landing page views, where cheap Threads inventory can soak up budget.

Who is most exposed

The report singles out ecommerce and retail teams heading into Black Friday and Cyber Monday. These accounts run the biggest budgets of the year in November, and an unplanned placement can quietly take a share of spend at exactly the wrong moment.

Lead-gen and app advertisers should run the same check. Any campaign on Advantage+ placements that has not been reviewed since summer may now be delivering on Threads without anyone having made that decision. If you manage many client accounts, add a Threads line to your weekly placement report so changes are visible across the whole book, not discovered one account at a time.

How to check your accounts

Break down results by placement for the last 7 days and compare Threads against Instagram feed on CPA and conversion rate, not CPM.

  • Ads Manager: Breakdown > By Delivery > Placement
  • Look for Threads spend in campaigns that never targeted it
  • If CPA on Threads is clearly worse, test a placement value rule that lowers Threads bids
  • Re-check after BFCM traffic starts, when auction dynamics change

What it means for you

  • Run a placement breakdown this week and look for new Threads spend.
  • Judge Threads on CPA and conversion rate, not on its lower CPM.
  • Value rules can reportedly cut Threads bids by up to 90% if exclusion is unavailable.
  • Upper-funnel objectives are most exposed to cheap, low-intent inventory.
