Thumbstop Rate

An informal term for hook rate: how effectively a video's first frame stops someone from scrolling past.

Thumbstop rate is functionally the same measurement as hook rate — attention captured in the opening moment — but the term emphasizes the physical action of a thumb pausing mid-scroll on a mobile feed. Agencies use it interchangeably with hook rate, sometimes reserving 'thumbstop' specifically for the very first frame or static thumbnail before video playback even begins.

Because Meta feeds are consumed almost entirely on mobile with sound off by default, a strong thumbstop typically relies on visual movement, bold on-screen text, or an unusual first frame rather than dialogue, since most viewers won't hear the audio at all in that first instant.
